Officers of the DANICS service are recruited directly through the Civil Services Examination (CSE). They are responsible for the diverse administrative functions of the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union territories.

Selection Process for DANICS Officers
This service has the same status as State Civil Service and later get promoted to Indian Administrative Service of Union Territories cadre only. For selection into DANICS, candidates have to qualify the Civil Services Exam (CSE), which is held every year at the notified dates. After qualifying, one can get the DANICS Officers Grade “B” posts.
The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a three-stage competitive selection process. The first stage is an objective type examination called – the preliminary (Prelims) examination.
This is a qualifying examination, and it consists of a General Studies (GS) paper and an aptitude test. Only the ones who pass this stage can appear for the “Mains Exam” which comprises the total of nine subjects.
Each candidate needs to select an optional subject (such as- two papers from Paper A and Paper B as per the syllabus) and four General Studies papers, an Essay, an English language paper and a regional language paper. An interview follows this, and the cadre is further augmented by the promotion of non-gazetted civil service officers. Two-thirds of the strength are filled by direct recruitment and the remaining by advertisement.

Postings of DANICS Officers
After the two years of the training period, DANICS officers are posted as the Assistant Collectors (District Administration, Delhi) or the Sub-Divisional Magistrates. On delegation in the Autonomous Bodies of Delhi like MCD, NDMC, DDA, etc. or as the Deputy Secretary (DS) in different Ministries of Delhi Government (DG). After attaining seniority and after some real-time experience, they get the promotion into Senior Grades such as -JAG-I and JAG-II/SAG and get inducted into the AGMUT cadre of the Indian Administrative Service.

Difference between DANICS and IAS
The selection of the IAS and DANICS officers are made through a standard union public services examination. Being a class A service, the basic pay, opportunities, and area of operation is quite broad in IAS DANICS comes under class B service, so its area of operation is quite different.
DANICS services were formed to cater to the specialized needs of Union territories of India. Union territories have a slightly different set of the politico-economic structure. They were kept separate because of reasons such as administrative convenience and strategic significance.
While a lieutenant general administers some union territories without legislative assembly, others such Delhi and Pondicherry have an elected assembly with Lieutenant Governor.

Officers of DANICS are not allotted any state cadre. In their respective careers, they have to work in Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra Nagar Haveli only. They start their respective careers at the rank of Deputy Collector. After 14 years of service, they may get promotions to IAS and continue their service in these places only.
DANICS officers can get to the level of a Secretary of any ministry in these places only by the time of their retirement. It may be equal to Joint Secretary to Government of India.
